Follow These 3 Crane Safety Tips to Prevent Workplace Mishaps

crane safety construction site inspections

Cranes are powerful, and they can do a lot of work very quickly. However, they are also very large, very heavy and very dangerous. Knowing how to operate a crane properly is therefore only a small part of the story. You’ll also have to follow the right safety recommendations:

  1. Make sure that your workers know the measures that have to be taken before the crane is turned on and used. The manual should provide a detailed list of maintenance checks that are required each and every time a crane is put into use. Without that list, it’s easy to overlook a problem that is not very easy to spot, but that can easily cause a disaster to happen. At that point, if you’re lucky, then only property damage will ensue.
  2. Another important tip is to properly assess the terrain and how easily it can support the weight of the crane. It’s not uncommon that cranes are placed in areas where the terrain is unknown or unstable, and the result could be that the crane might sink into the earth under the pressure of its own weight.
  3. Make sure to hire a professional who will check all the systems of the crane on a regular basis and perform the annual crane inspection maintenance and repair tasks often which is needed to keep the crane operational. Also, make sure you follow their advice as well as the manual and the OSHA guidelines for crane operation and for hiring the right staff to operate and take proper care of the crane.
